Little Red Riding Hood, or Little Red Ridinghood, also known as Little Red Cap or simply Red Riding Hood, is a European fairy tale about a young girl and a Big Bad Wolf. The story has been changed considerably in its history and subject to numerous modern adaptations and readings. The story was first published by Charles Perrault.

When you think about it, almost all European folklore slash fairy tales had some moments of horror. Snow White's stepmother the Evil Queen was tortured to death at the hand of Snow White;  The witch in Hansel and Gretel was shoved into the oven by the brothers. Little Red Riding Hood took it one step further by having the innocent protagonist killed. For some reason, I really like the horrific ending rather than the "living happily ever after" trope that are all too common.

I like the original Little Red Riding Hood, in which both the grandma and the little girl were eaten by the Big Bad Wolf. The story warns of the grim fate of trusting a stranger, who could a big bad wolf in disguise. It's a faithful portrayal of real life as is. There's no cliche "good guys always win" because in real life there's no hero to save you.

The revised Little Red Hood story has the Woodcutter show up and cut open the sleeping wolf, rescuing both the girl and the grandma. The revised and fantasized story is more appropriate for children but ultimately falls short of warning us about the messed up reality.
