Guild Wars 2 is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by ArenaNet and published by NCsoft. Set in the fantasy world of Tyria, the game follows the re-emergence of Destiny's Edge, a disbanded guild dedicated to fighting the Elder Dragons, a Lovecraftian species that has seized control of Tyria in the time since the original Guild Wars. The game takes place in a persistent world with a story that progresses in instanced environments. [1]

The expansion in keywords:

  • 9 new specializations, one for each profession - new ways to play your characters.
  • 5 new zones, bigger than before.
  • Mounts - brand new feature, these animals let you traverse the new zones. Jump, run and hover your way through the land and use them to reach areas you can't get to without them. You can ride them to combat and use their help to solve puzzles.
  • The expansion is cheaper than Heart of Thorns, costing $30, with additional (more and more expensive) tiers for bonus (mostly cosmetic) stuff. However, Heart of Thorns is not included in this price. You have to pay an extra $20.
  • The expansion will be released on September 22, this year. A free to play trial weekend will be held next weekend. You don't have purchase the game to play in the trial, you only have to register for a free account and download the client.

    There are too many "boons" (their jargon for buffs) and "conditions" (debuffs) that last a fraction of a second unless you're in a group to stack them. It makes each character feels weak on their own. It doesn't help that the abilities that grant those buffs or debuffs are most likely on a 20 seconds or more cooldown. Casting a 30 second CD spell to blind an enemy for 2 seconds sounds very underwhelming to me.

    The DPS aspect of the game is worse than vanilla WoW. You simply cycle through your abilities, blowing all their cooldown and then strafe around the boss, autoattacking, dodging boss AOE occasionally and interrupting using long cooldown are the only challenge.

    IMO, GW2 should implement a priority system and more "procs" like WoW. It would shake things up and gives combat more variety.

    GW2 has a very unique model. It's a B2P game that has recently gone F2P. You can enjoy the base game and its enormous amount of content for free. The only tradeoff is having only 2 character slots and locked access to expansion content.

    But what is this if the gameplay wasn't good? To tell you the truth, GW2 isn't for everyone. You don't learn new skills to use because your skills come with the weapons you equip. This offers a lot of flexibility for you to freely customize your loadout but at the same time, it also means that every class is the same. If you don't mind this, however, then GW2 has a lot to offer.


  • Great business model. Everything is available to free players. Cash shop sells mostly cosmetic items
  • Amazing PVE content and story mode. Regular content update that keeps you interested.
  • The best open world hands down. The world feels alive and frequented by players. Even the low level zones are brimming with activities.
  • Normalized PVP meaning that everyone starts at the same gear level.
  • WvW maps that not only allows PVP, but also let players who enjoy PVE to have something to do.
  • Excellent crafting system that takes huge dedication to level up.
  • Cons:

  • Combat feels floaty at times. Not a very big concern but GW2's combat feels inferior to modern Korean action-combat MMO.
  • Very few raids and PVE end-game content. Dungeons are dead.
  • Not enough meaningful content and power creep if that's what you enjoy. Ascended gear is mere marginal upgrades over the easy-to-acquire exotic gear.

    Given the quality of the game, it could well charge a subscription fee. Guild Wars 2 is a persistent world MMO in its entirety. The only thing lacking is end game content, which is why they decided not to charge a monthly fee.

    The game itself is not so fun, but its production values are everywhere, from the cool art style, impressive engine to innovative game mechanism.

    I tried it years ago and again today... for about five minutes before I uninstalled it immediately after. The gameplay itself just feels so bland. Everything about the game just feels a little stale to be honest. I'm not saying that to rip on gw2 either, I was rooting for it as I was a huge fan of the original. The suckiest part is I betted on my reputation with my friends for it to be good, only to have all four of them quit in less than two weeks.

    I played Guild Wars 2 for half a year. It was fun at first because the dynamic events made the world feel alive. I like and hate the system that drops your level to the zone you're currently in, which trivializes my efforts spent leveling my character. 

    GW2 would be so much better if they actually had quests. Dynamic events themselves were an interesting concept that probably didn't pay off, especially when the rest of the gameplay is severely lacking in the fun factor.

    Classes are boring and not fun enough to play. I'd say the weapon-based skill system is not intuitive. The talents are mundane and don't offer that many choices.

    There are way better #F2P MMO out there.

    It's amazing this game is still alive and booming after three years thanks to the active and unrelenting support of the developer. The game, essentially an MMO, was kept alive with cosmetic microtransaction while keeping updates to the core game free of charge. Guild Wars 2 receives update every 2 weeks through a system called Living Story, in which the game's story will progress and updates to the persistent world occasionally happen. The beauty of GW2's model is that I can still log on to the game once every few months to see what's going on without having to pay a fee, and at the same time keep the despicable pay-to-win stuff out of the game.

    After 3 years, the game finally has announced its first expansion, Heart of Thorns. Personally I will not be buying this expansion, but some of you may be interested:

    The expansion will let players explore the Heart of Maguuma, a brand new jungle area. The Heart of Maguuma is made up of three distinct biomes, and ArenaNet says it's one of the largest areas it ever built.

    Guild Wars 2 game director Colin Johanson announced the news at the company's "Guild Wars 2: Beyond the Point of No Return" panel at PAX South.

    The expansion will add the Mastery system, an endgame, account-based PvP progression system. Players will earn mastery points as they explore the map, complete missions, and other activities, which they'll be able to spend them on abilities available across characters for your PVP account. For example, players will be able to buy the hand gliding ability, and improve it to reach hard to reach locations.

     The expanion also introduces Specializations, which will give existing classes access to new skills and weapons, the new Revenant profession, a new World vs. World Borderland map, and the competitive PvP Stronghold mode, where players fight for control of supplies, recruit troops, and attack the enemy stronghold.

    Players in the audience were especially excited to hear about the addition of Guild Halls, a space for your guild to meet, progress your Guild Hall, and organize for guild missions.
